What is preventative dental care?- Castle Rock Colorado

Preventive dental care, such as regular dental care and good oral hygiene, started early in life can lead to excellent overall oral health throughout your life. It also helps detect and prevent oral diseases like tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer.

While preventive dental care is critical to keeping your teeth healthy throughout your life, it goes beyond that. Your oral health may affect your general health, as well.

What is preventative dental care? What is Preventive Dentistry?

Preventive dental care means actively caring for your teeth through brushing, flossing, and regular checkups. The purpose of preventive dental care is to identify and fix small problems before becoming more significant and costly.

What are the essential preventive dentistry services?

Preventive dentistry includes services such as:

  •  Checking both teeth and gums for signs of tooth decay and gum disease
  •  Monitoring your mouth and neck for other health concerns, such as oral cancer
  •  X-rays of your teeth to check for cracks or cavities
  •  Removing plaque and tartar
  •  Brush and floss your teeth
  •  Make suggestions on other tests, procedures or treatments based on age and health

What is Your Part in Preventive Dental Care?

Preventive dental care starts with what you do at home, just as much as it does with getting regular checkups. The earlier in life you start with healthy dental habits, the higher chance of reducing cavities, gum disease, and gingivitis.

What you should be doing for preventative dental care at home:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day, usually morning and night. Your dentist can assist you with the right toothbrush and toothpaste for you, and correct brushing techniques.
  • Floss daily! Brushing alone does not get rid of food particles that can become trapped between your teeth and gums.
  • Use mouthwash to rinse out food particles after flossing. Your dentist can also make recommendations on what type of mouthwash to use.
  • Avoid acidic foods that can hurt your tooth enamel.
  • Be careful with hard foods, such as candies, foods with bones, seeds, or pits that could damage teeth.
  • Don’t smoke or use tobacco products. Both of these can cause cancer, teeth staining, and other dental problems
  • Use a mouthguard when participating in sports
  • If you suspect you may grind your teeth at night, speak with your dentist about a nighttime mouthguard

Who to See for Preventive Dental Care

There are a few types of dentist and dental specialties. For preventive dental care, you should see a general dentist and a pediatric dentist for anyone under the age of 18.

A general dentist may also be called a family dentist. This is your go-to provider who you see twice a year for routine preventive care like teeth cleanings, exams, and X-rays. They can also do fillings and provide other necessary dental care.

One of your general dentist’s key roles is guiding you in proper dental care. They will be able to identify potential problems, build healthier habits, and refer you to dental specialists if you need additional treatments or procedures.

Pediatric dentists specialize in preventive dental care for kids. Most kids will start with dental care sometimes as soon as their first tooth appears, or around their first birthday. A pediatric dentist will continue to see children through their teenage years. They also provide specialized care when needed, including extractions, fillings, and oral surgery in some cases.
