If you have a cracked or chipped tooth, or if you are looking to change up the look of your teeth, dental veneers might be for you! Veneers are part of the cosmetic side of dentistry and are used mainly for aesthetic purposes. When looking at changing up your smile, are veneers the right product for you, what type should you get, and are they worth the cost?

What are Veneers?

Veneers are thin shells made out of porcelain or composite resin. Unlike crowns, veneers are affixed only to the front of the tooth and around the bottom edge. They are meant to correct dental issues like discoloration, chips, cracks, uneven spacing or alignment, genetic problems, and worn enamel.

Generally, if you are looking for a whiter smile, professional tooth whitening might be the best route to take.  However, if you still aren’t satisfied with the color of your teeth or you have dark teeth that don’t respond to whitening, veneers will be the best product for you.

Porcelain VS. Composite

Because veneers are not typically covered under insurance, it is important to understand the cost of the procedure. Knowing the prices and other factors between a resin and porcelain veneer will help you decide which material you should get.

Composite Resin

Composite resin veneers are the more cost-friendly version of the two types. The material used for this veneer is the same as the material used for cavity fillings. This type of veneer is usually done chair-side, meaning that you don’t have to wait for your shells to be created. Your dentist will take a simple imprint of your teeth, match the color, and use their skills to develop the shell that will be placed on the front of each tooth. This procedure usually takes between 1-2 visits, depending on how many teeth you are covering.

On average, a composite resin veneer will cost you between $250 and $1500 per tooth. It is about half the price of the porcelain counterparts. They typically last anywhere between 4 to 8 years. Another positive is that they are easily fixable if you would happen to chip or crack the veneer. A downside is that they can stain much quicker than compared to a porcelain veneer and are not as sturdy. They aren’t as natural-looking compared to a porcelain veneer either.

Porcelain

The most common type of veneer and the kind of veneer you see on the smiles of celebrities, porcelain can give you the smile that you have always wanted. Porcelain veneers are created after your dentist takes molds of your teeth and sends them out to a lab. The dental technicians at the lab will design and send the shells back to your dental clinic, and then your smile transformation can begin!

The price can be anywhere between $900 and $2500 per shell. This kind of cost is a significant factor when deciding which material to go with. However, porcelain veneers are the most cost-effective option in the long run because they last between 10-15 years when properly cared for. Porcelain is also a more natural-looking and aesthetically pleasing option for those looking to really up their smile game. They are also sturdier than composite veneers, but if a porcelain veneer is chipped or broken, you have to replace the veneer in its entirety.

If you get porcelain veneers and are known to grind or clench your teeth, it is recommended to get a night guard to protect you from breaking them. If you don’t protect or care for them properly, you might end up paying for the same shell more than once!
